Temple: Apple victory could be a loss for consumers

Apple scored a decisive victory in its closely watched patent suit against Samsung last week, but it's far from clear whether it represents a win for consumers.
By all accounts, the case is really a proxy war against Google, the maker of the Android smartphone operating system used by Samsung, HTC and other handset manufacturers to compete against Apple's iPhone. The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, once a friend to Google's co-founders, considered the search company's move into mobile a betrayal that demanded revenge.
"I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product," he told his biographer, Walter Isaacson. "I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."
The first major fallout from that conflict became clear on Friday, as a San Jose, Calif., jury concluded that Samsung's Android-based mobile products had infringed on a handful of Apple's patents, including ones covering features like "pinch-to-zoom" and the shape of the phone.
