The true test of one’s skills as a trader is if they can make money in both a rising market and a falling one. The easiest way to do this is by mastering short trading, be it thru put options or the stocks/index ETF’s themselves, but its not the only way. You can also search for stocks/sectors that are holding up well in the face of broader market weakness and trade within those trends.
